Domo v. Target = End of Domo?

Brandweek said recently (9/15/2008 issue, but  I can’t find a link to the story) that Target is making Domo a centerpiece of its Halloween promotional efforts.

Erik Nakamura declares Domo is now dead, backs up his argument with pictures.

[Domo licensing was the subject of this July 22, 2007 Consumed.]

Further diversion may be found at MKTG Tumblr, and the Consumed Facebook page.

It’s absolutely true the products are lame, but quite honestly these would be crappy products regardless of the character. Gummy teeth? Is that the best a huge corporation like Target can come up with to exploit this character? Even if it were gummy Mario cap (the most recognized character in the US), the product would still be the equivalent of an A-Bomb of uncool. The thing with Domo is that he isn’t big with the kids. Hell he’s not big with adults either. He’s big with 18-25 year olds on the internet all day. While doing candy shopping for Halloween, who’s going? Parents, with their kids to help guide them into making the right decision. Is a kid (who will assume Target just made up Domo) more likely to get this character they are seeing for the first time on a skewer, or a bag of fun size Snickers or Skittles? Also…man did they kill Domo. Dressed up as a witch? Really Target?
Not cute.
