Can hatred of Crocs sell more Crocs?

When I wrote about Crocs in Consumed (July 15, 2007), I suggested that the fact that many people hate Crocs was probably seen as a plus for those who wore Crocs (“maverick cachet,” etc.). Some, including the person I spoke with at the company, insisted that this was not so.

However, Crocs hatred is now apparently the brand’s new selling point, if this new commercial is any indication. Maybe the brand should’ve simply hired I Hate Crocs.

Via AdFreak.

Further diversion may be found at MKTG Tumblr, and the Consumed Facebook page.

The whole set of spots is very um… eclectic. They know they are ugly. I know they are ugly. I was given a pair. I didn’t wear them, so the giver wore them. Then I said “hey those are mine!” and started wearing them. Quite comfortable. Easy to take on and off. Now I’m one of those people that others look at and say “what is WRONG with people?” but my feets are happy.

Well, you’re not alone. I know Crocs, the company, has posted numbers that disappointed Wall Street in recent quarters, but judging by anecdotal observation, I wonder if their big problem is really Crocs-like products, borderline knockoffs, getting more popular. Cheap-o versions everywhere now, even grocery stores.
